Exploring Arakurayama Sengen Park. Stepping out of Shimoyoshida Station, I felt a rush of excitement as clear signs pointed me towards Arakurayama Sengen Park. Joining the flow of people, I was eager to embark on an unforgettable adventure. The park’s most famous feature is the Mount Fuji Observation Deck, located halfway up the mountain. This spot, frequently showcased in Japanese brochures and postcards, offers breathtaking views that draw photographers and tourists from around the world.
The climb up the 398 steps to Chureito Pagoda was challenging but oh, was it worth it! I paused frequently not just to catch my breath but to take in the stunning views of Mount Fuji that appeared behind me.
Every step offered a new perspective each more beautiful than the last. The combination of Chureito Pagoda and Mount Fuji created a picture-perfect scene that felt almost surreal.
Arakurayama Sengen Park is a magnet for photographers and tourists from all over the world. It’s easy to see why it’s listed among the “21 places that photographers around the world must visit.” Each season transforms the park: fiery red leaves in autumn, a serene snowy landscape in winter, and lush green foliage in summer. The park not only offers stunning views of Mount Fuji but also overlooks the charming streets of Fujiyoshida City.
To get to the five story pagoda and observation deck, you can either climb the steps or take the barrier free slope. I chose the steps enjoying the gradual reveal of Mount Fuji as I ascended.
The observation deck with its three levels provides plenty of space for everyone to capture their perfect shot. The early morning and late evening light made the scenery even more magical.
The Mount Fuji Observation Deck is a highlight of the park and features in many Japanese brochures and postcards. The walk through the park is short taking less than an hour but it is packed with picturesque views. Along the way, I noticed signs warning of bears, wild boars, and monkeys. While I didn’t encounter any wildlife, it added a sense of adventure to the journey. The park’s over 200 cherry blossom trees made it a paradise for nature lovers like me.
Offering an ideal spot for capturing stunning views of Mount Fuji. The park’s vast cherry blossom forest begins to bloom in late February, creating a romantic scene of pink and white blossoms against the backdrop of the mountain. Walking among thousands of blossoms with Mount Fuji in the background was like stepping into a dream.
I also took the time to visit Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine, a site steeped in history. Built in 705, it has been visited by several powerful leaders over the centuries. After Mount Fuji erupted in the early 800s, an emperor sent an envoy to pray at the shrine to prevent further eruptions. Today, the shrine is a place where many people come to wish for easy childbirth and childrearing.
Getting to Arakurayama Sengen Park is easy, whether you choose to travel by train or bus. From Shinjuku, the journey takes about two hours by train and ninety minutes by bus.
Once you exit Shimoyoshida Station, follow the signs leading to Arakurayama Sengen Park. It’s a ten minute walk to the park’s entrance and another ten minutes to reach Chureito Pagoda. As you follow this route, enjoy the anticipation of the stunning views that await you.
Arakurayama Sengen Park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural significance. Whether you’re an avid photographer, a nature lover or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, this park promises an unforgettable experience. It’s a journey I highly recommend adding to your travel itinerary and you won’t regret it!
The best time to visit Arakurayama Sengen Park is during the cherry blossom season in spring, typically from late March to early April. This is when the park is adorned with stunning cherry blossoms, creating a picturesque backdrop against Mount Fuji. However, the park also offers beautiful views in other seasons, such as the vibrant autumn foliage in October and November and the serene snow-covered landscape in winter
Entrance to Arakurayama Sengen Park including access to Chureito Pagoda is free of charge. Visitors can ascend the steps or follow the path beneath a large torii gate to reach the entrance of Arakurayama Sengen Shrine
Chureito Pagoda is renowned for its unparalleled views of Mt. Fuji, often surpassing its fame for cherry blossoms. Rated among the top spots for admiring the mountain, it offers a striking juxtaposition of the pagoda’s vibrant red silhouette, the azure sky, blooming cherry blossoms, and the majestic presence of Mt. Fuji
