Rainbow Bridge, The Colorful Lights

IMG_2028

The Rainbow bridge is one of the wonderful attractions of Tokyo, and it is fantastically beautiful in the evening and at night.

This is a view of Odaiba shot from the observatory of the Japanese TV station Fuji Television. The large bridge that can be seen in the middle is called the “Rainbow Bridge” and it connects the central part of Tokyo and Odaiba.

It is a fun place to go. The Rainbow bridge itself is wonderful despite the fact that it wasn’t lit up in rainbow colors when we were there.

The Rainbow Bridge really comes alive at night when it lights up in color. Many boats come to visit the bridge at night and they are all colorfully lit up. Combined with the city lights and Tokyo Tower in the background it really is a beautiful place to visit.

The Rainbow Bridge is a 918-meter-long suspension bridge that connects Odaiba with the Tokyo Waterfront across northern Tokyo Bay. The bottom of the bridge is 54 meters above the water and it is supported by white towers on both shores. Solar energy powers red, white and green lights which light up the wires of the bridge at night.

In the evening the light of the sunset plays on the metal structure creating a rainbow of colors and hence the name which was chosen by the public. The bridge took 6 years to build and was completed in 1993.

It has two levels, one an expressway (Shuto Expressway #11 Daiba Route-Port of Tokyo), and the other level has a regular road, a walk-way on both sides of the bridge, and the automotive driver-less Yurikamone Rapid Transit System.

The 30-minute walk across the bridge is a popular tourist activity and offers brilliant views of the city. The walkways are open from 9 am to 9 pm. For a different view of the bridge, you can take a water bus under the structure, the boats travel from Hinode Pier on the Tokyo side to Fuji television Building on the Odaiba side.

In addition, there is the Statue of Liberty within Odaiba Kaihin Park. In commemoration of Japan’s friendship with France, the Statue of Liberty that had been on Ile des Cygnes on the River Seine in France was lent to Odaiba for 1 year in 1998. But then after getting official permission from the French government, it was completely rebuilt and newly placed in 2000 as a symbol of Japan-France friendship.

The Statue of Liberty with Rainbow Bridge in the background has become a highlight of the Daiba area.
